Privacy, in plain English

We measure the journey, not the person.

Friendship Day uses first-party, pseudonymous analytics to learn which wording helps people share a kind message. The measurement is designed to work without knowing who you are or who your friends are.

Analytics on this browser

On — privacy-friendly measurement is active

What we measure

Visits, engagement, share actions and attributed return visits.

What we do not collect

Names, contacts, messages, raw IP addresses or precise location.

Your choice

Turn analytics off without affecting the Friendship Day page.

Information we collect

We record first-party events such as a page opening, reaching the quality threshold, pressing a share button, opening the phone’s share sheet, using a copy fallback, and arriving through a Friendship Day share link.

Each browser and session receives a random pseudonymous identifier. A share link receives a separate random token so we can count a genuine attributed visit and its generation (G1, G2 or G3). These identifiers do not contain a name, phone number or social account.

We may also record the copy variant, broad device class (for example, mobile), browser family, share method, referral category and the visitor’s local calendar date. A successful share handoff means the phone accepted the share action; it does not prove that a message was delivered or read.

Information we deliberately avoid

We do not collect names, email addresses, phone numbers, address books, friend lists, message contents, raw IP addresses, precise location, advertising IDs or device fingerprints. We do not ask for sensitive information such as health, beliefs, ethnicity, politics or sexual orientation.

We do not use third-party advertising pixels, sell analytics data, build advertising profiles or try to identify people from the pseudonymous data. The page does not need access to your WhatsApp contacts or conversations.

Why we use it

The purpose is limited to operating the page, preventing inflated bot or self-open counts, measuring the sharing funnel, comparing message variants and improving the experience. We report grouped results such as qualified visits, share rate, verified propagation and generation-level K.

Storage and retention

  • Raw analytics events are scheduled for deletion after 90 days.
  • Share-attribution tokens are scheduled for deletion after 30 days.
  • The current dashboard is calculated from retained event and attribution data; it does not create a separate long-term personal history.

Cleanup runs automatically during service activity and whenever an administrator checks the dashboard; a temporary delay can occur while the site is inactive. We use access controls, encryption in transit and restricted admin access to protect the analytics service. Hosting and security providers may process the minimum data needed to run the service, subject to their service safeguards.

How to opt out

Use the control near the top of this page. It saves a preference in this browser and stops new analytics events from being sent. It does not disable sharing, music or the celebration effects. The choice applies only to this browser; repeat it on another browser or device.

Turning analytics off does not immediately remove previously collected pseudonymous events. Those events are automatically deleted under the retention schedule above. If browser storage is cleared, the opt-out preference will also be cleared.

Children and young people

Friendship Day does not use analytics for targeted advertising or profiling. We apply the same data-minimising settings to every visitor and do not request a date of birth, contact list, precise location or sensitive information from children or adults.
